Androgyny Image

This 1953 pulp novel from Lion Books, Inc. tells the story of hermaphrodite Steven Bankow who was born with both male and female reproductive organs. His anomaly presents the familiar, yet sensationalized story of the outcast, seeking to identify himself as a man in spite of his abnormal anatomy. In his inability to fit any gender classification easily, Bankow represents the mid-20th century version of the monstrous medieval hermaphrodite.
